Phase 5 has a board for everyone. The first thing you need to do is figure out if you want a surf style or a skim style. Once you have that then you can start looking in the correct category for a new board. If you have a local dealer who will allow you to demo a specific board, it is always helpful to put your feet on a board before purchasing. If not, be sure to check the board's weight and height chart. A board that is too small will usually end with an unhappy result. Try to stay within the parameters of the size chart for the best results!
Yes, it is possible and is usually quite simple. You want to make sure to repair dings before they get worse so you avoid water seeping into the core of the board. You can use marine grade epoxy to repair most problem areas. Follow the instructions given on the epoxy and make sure to let it dry completely and cure before using the board again.
Yes. You can order new traction pads on our website here. Removing the old traction will take a little work. To remove the old pad, start by peeling it off the best you can. It will probably rip off into smaller pieces and leave some glue left on the board. You can use Goo Gone to clean off the old glue left behind. Apply small amounts on the glue residue and use a cloth to wipe it off. Once you get the board nice and clean, wipe it down with some rubbing alcohol to get all the Goo Gone and residue off the board. When it is completely clean, the new pad will go on just like a big sticker. Once it sticks, it is hard to pull up and move so take your time and make sure it is straight!
Fins play a big role in how a wakesurf board rides. The general rule is that the larger the fin/fins, the more stable and locked in the board will feel. On a skim style board, a lot of riders will start with a 2” fin to help get used to the slippery feeling and then go smaller as they progress. Same with surf styles – if a board feels too tight and rigid on the water, you can go to a smaller set of fins to free the board up and give it a looser feel.
Skim style boards will have a thinner core with a wider profile, a flat bottom with little to no channels, a single fin configuration and a harder rail. This shape and rail allow the skim style board to ride higher in the water and create minimal drag, making the skim style a faster board with less effort. The single fin (in some cases no fin) gives the skim style board the feel of being slippery or “free” as you ride. Skim style boards will spin very easily and are made for doing shuv-its, big spins, and many other technical tricks.
Surf Style boards are exactly what they sound like and they resemble an ocean style short board. With a thicker foam core and more parallel rails, these style boards have a more rounded rail shape which allows the board to sink a little deeper in the water and helps it roll over from rail to rail when carving. Surf style boards will have anywhere from 1-4 fins and you can swap fins out to find the best fit for your riding style. These boards are more stable and generate lots of speed down the line but take a little more work to spin.
All wakesurf boards can do 360’s. Typically a skim style board with a smaller fin will spin a lot easier than a surf style with larger fins. Surf style boards will come around and stay straight with the larger fins while the skim style boards will sometimes over rotate on you.
Phase 5 is a family owned and operated business. It started with our sister company, Zap Skimboards, back in 1983. Bob Smetts has mastered the art of building boards made for smaller waves like boat wakes. Our boards are handmade in our factory in Venice, FL USA. This gives Phase 5 the ability to have full quality control on every board made. All of the boards are made with the highest quality materials for the best ride possible.
